Year One of Psych Nursing: A Review

This year has flown by, so I think I need to do a quick review.
I still remember the first day of class, everyone eyeing each other up, trying to figure out who would be a good candidate for friend. I got all hyped up by the speech Sue gave, making me feel like I won some award for the greatest job of all time.
As the year progressed I made some pretty good friends, and I hope I stay friends with them for a really long time actually.
Anatomy can go suck a giant dick, I'm done with you.
I've learned alot though if I really think about it.  I think I could make a pretty decent psychiatric nurse actually. I've learned how to really understand people, how to talk to them, and how to ask the right questions. Its weird when I catch myself using these skills in real life.
And of course theres all the medical things I've learned. Who would of thought a year ago that I would now understand what adventitious lung and heart sounds were like and what they could mean? Who knew I'd understand how to help someone based on a brief physical assessment and a couple vital signs?
Blowing my mind actually.

I've moved twice while in regina. The first house being hell on earth, more drama then my own life's combined. The second place stuck, I'll miss my new friend/roomie Erin like crazy. She's been so great at making Regina more like home to me, a place I'll actually miss.

This last clinical experience has come to a close, and I've become more and more confident in the skills I've learned. I'm sad to leave my clients, who asked if they would ever see me again. I know I wont, which is hard, but I guess thats all part of the job.

Kristin, Kayla, Kristine and I went down to North Battleford on friday to check out the hospital we will be working at and our living arrangements. What an experience.
First we stopped in Stoon for lunch. We walked through the downtown for a bit, near the river and I'm glad they got to see just how beautiful stoon is. It made me even more eager to get back to it! Stopped at Hudsons for lunch and sat on the patio, it was so delicious.
Then we drove out to NB. We drive up this narrow road surrounded by trees and all I can think is "oh my god, I;ve seen this movie before" and sure enough we pull up to this three story, huge red brick building, Sask Hospital, our new home. Old as hell, scary as hell with frosted windows that you can see clients walking behind them like creepy shadows.
The ground are beautiful though, all trees and benches overlooking the valley that separates Battleford and NB. Then we go inside, and everything is completely silent, like hear my own heartbeat silent. Until the phone at the front desk rings which I swear they chose just for the creepy ass ringtone. The secretary gets one of the security guards to give us our grand tour.
So Sask Hospital is 100% mental health, nothing else. It is separated into....i think six units. Behaviour, cognitive, rehabilitation, short term, long term and forensics. Each is separated by lock and coded doors. One unit has very few rooms, but they are all tiny, white washed, with only a little twin bed with straps on it. And in the corner of each room is a camera that you can watch from the nuses station in black and white. Creepy stuff.
This place hasnt been renovated until the 60s easily, it looks exactlly like One Flew Over the Kukoos Nest.
And then there is forensics. Its the area of psychiatry I thought I wanted to make a career on, but now I'm not so sure. Its for people who commits crimes anywhere from assault, to rape, to murder, to the worst thing you can think of. They are sent there to undergo psychiatric evaluation to see if they are criminally responsible for their crimes. Its pretty intense, this place has seen everyone you've heard stories about. So we go in to see it and immediately the nurses freak out and yell at us to get behind the nurses station. As we do I turn and notice that the patients have all stopped what they were doing and are just staring at us.Turns out there is a strick dress code on that ward, no makeup, no skin, no nothing that will identify you as female really. SO we felt pretty shitty when we walked on the unit in summer clothes. Ooops.
So we got off that unit pretty quick.
Finished our tour by looking at the house we'll be living in which is pretty excellent, old, but good. Its about a two minute walk from the hospital haha. So some of the girls I was with were pretty uneasy. Not only the hospital, but behind our house was a youth correction center and a prison for men serving less than two years. Good times.

But yeah
I spent all morning packing, and cleaning, and dusting. And now I'm basically ready to go.
Tomorrow is my last exam and then the party to celebrate it all.

And then Saturday I'm coming home!!

xoxoxo

SO there is only 17 days left until my last day of school for the year. So excited. I have already started cleaning out all the junk in my room that I won't ever need.
Not going to lie though, I am going to miss Regina. I've met some pretty awesome people, and there is a few spots in this city I'll miss partying at and eating at and such.
Like Fresh and Sweet, the best sweet and savory breakfast place of all time
And michi, the greatest sushi
And La Macroon, desserts to die for
And wascana park
and the Creek Bistro, more good food.
So yeah, I'll mostly be missing food. But even more so the people I won't be living with in North Battleford next fall as we are all being split up four ways.
Le sigh
More changes!

The summer will be excellent though. Fingers crossed I get the job at the hospital in Stoon. And then Sam will be home soon, and then her and I are going to Craven with her friends from BC. haha that will be an experience.  And being with all my friends again :) it shall be nice. I just want to drink beer in the sun on James' lawn :-p

Gotta get through these next few weeks though. This week is going by fairly fast. The more time I spend on the ward, the more confident I get. I'm not as shy when I want to talk about care plans and client care with the real life nurses now haha. And I don't hesitate with my skills :) its so awesome, I cannot describe how rewarding this rotation has been. Seeing people progress from a terrible accident or condition, to going back to being able to go home and be independent. Its awesome.
Next week I have to have whole new clients though, which is somewhat sad. I've grown rather attached to mine :(

But yes, we have friday off so I'll hopefully be back in Saskatoon thursday night, given Canadian Tire is done with my car (450 alternator fix, shoot me).
I am actually contemplating just selling the thing this summer and starting from scratch. I bet even a sunfire would last longer then this one has.

Anyway, I'm off to school with dear Deejai to finish (I mean start) our pharmacology presentation that is due tomorrow. Joys/

I guess I'm Broken

Today was busy. Didn't have to go to clinical because we were getting fitted for our respirators. Apparently I'm broken because I couldn't taste the horrible spray that everyone else could taste while getting tested. Those fitted respirators are a pain in the ass though, if I wasn't claustrophobic before I sure as hell am now. Way too tight.
After that we just did client research all day. My one client who I had for a day has been taken from me so now I have two new ones. So I'm pretty excited.
Deejai and I are doing a presentation on cytotoxic drugs next week so we had better get a head start on that one asap. Already with this short week I feel like I am waaaayyyy behind.

After research I went and met Chelsey A for some stirfry at Mongolie Grill. She's moving back to Ontario on Saturday and won't be back until after she has the wee babe so I had to say my goodbyes :( It was a good visit though.
Then Erin told me to meet her at Houstons for some good visits. So I went there, found out they had three dollar highballs, and decided to never leave. So good.

Went home and worked out the guilt of eating and drinking shitty things. I promised myself I would stop eating junk, Alas, junk tastes so good and is so easy to access when there is no time to make anything healthy.

Now I am going over some high fidelity lab senarios which I was just informed about like three seconds ago. Le sigh, these last three weeks will be the death of me.
YES I SAID LAST THREE WEEKS

Saskatoon, I can taste it.
Soon

Well last night was fun :)
Around five I went over to Kristen's and got ready for our night out there. At 730 we went to Michi with a bunch of other people from class for the bestest sushi ever. I got to have infinite toro which has become my new fav choice.
After that we all went back to Kristen's to do some predrinking before we went out to the bar. Found out that some of the guys there are actually really good friends with Liz and Jordan :) so super small world.
Eventually we made it to The Owl, drank a little more then I should have and at one point I agreed to go to Gabbos. It was decent, Chelsey knew someone who got us in and paid for our cab which is always wonderful lol.

This morning I was just miserable. Txt my roommate begging her to get me a taco but she refused. Eventually she agreed to drive me to the mall so I could get one. SOOO delicious. Then I napped for a while.
Went for supper with Chelsey Abraham to the Knotted Thistle where I had a super duper delicious burger :) Chatted about her upcoming move to Thunder Bay, and talked about the baby (she's pregnant dawe )

Now I am chilling at the house watching Community, the greatest show on the planet.

Tomorrow I'm off to Stoon for Mothers Day!!!

Let's Try this Again

Sweet Lord I haven't blogged since Feb??? Kind of tempted to scrap anything and start all over. Jk, but I promise I'll try to get back into the swing of things. So I started third semester a couple of weeks ago, and there was a brief moment where we all waited with our breaths held because there was a chance I wasn't going to make it through. Stupid mother fucking anatomy. That shit's hard, but in the end I won :) This semester is only two months ish long, and already it has been flying by. The last two weeks we having been going over health concepts of all the body systems. Up until now we've spent all of our time learning about whats normal, not we are focusing on clinical manifestations of everything that could go wrong. It is super super interesting. Next week we are doing a quick two day review of the skills we learned in first semester like catheters, etc. Then it's off to four weeks of solid clinical. It's gonna be so intense, but I'm looking forward to it. My placement is back at the Rehabilitation Center. Which to be honest was slightly disappointing at first because I have already been there, but I'm on the active rehab unit so hopefully it will be a lot more interesting. I just really want to get er done so we can go to North Battleford. Yes, I said it. I'm excited for NB. We'll finally be starting into the actual psych aspect of this, so Im so pumped!!! Cortlin came to visit me on Monday. The timing maybe wasn't great with my classes but I think I did a decent job with getting my homework done ahead of time so we could hang out. Haven't seen him in like two months. Unacceptable, tsk tsk. We're so bad at long distance lol. But we went and saw the Avengers O_O it was pretty amazing. I want to see it again for sure sure. Tuesday night we went out to the Knotted Thistle where I used to work.....oh right...I quit my job last week haha. They were tres gay so yeah. That's done. But we went so he could see it and get to know some of the people I go to school with. It was a pretty good time :) Drank 1/2 yard. Next time I'll try the whole yard. Tonight a bunch of us from class have decided that we are going to go out for supper and then hit the bars for some good ol drinkin times. I better charge the camera!! Alright, I think that'a pretty decent post for now. Tomorrow I promise to write again! P.S. Oh yeah, I'm gonna be an auntie FYI. kks is preggers. lulz

Midterms, I defeated you

So I just finished my last midterm today, and by some magic I got all my marks back in less than an hour? Passed em all with flying colors. So thats a huge weight off my shoulders. :)

Yesterday was my first day of training at the Knotted Thistle which is a Celtic pub opening up in Regina next week. Man, this place kicks ass. It has the best variety of scotch, whiskey and bourbon in Regina apparently. AND it has yard glasses, which are these things...

60 oz of beer, and i hear almost impossible to finish without wearing half of it.
But yeah, the pub is super badass. Second night of training is tonight and I get to pretty much eat the menu, and test all the beers and wines. Yes please.

Cortlin came down for Valentines Day :) We had a pretty chill night. Went to Beer Bros which is a fancy restaurant that instead of recommending wine pairings with your meal, they recommend beer pairings. So that was pretty fun.
I had blue cheese and mushroom gnocchi :) so nom nom.
Then we went and visited Kayla's new puppy Daigoro, whom Cortlin renamed and got to respond to Diglet. What a cute ass puppy though. Mini dashound

Tomorrow I may or may not have anatomy? My teacher is being very vague about it all.

And with this new job I'm worried about how much time I am going to have to come home for the break, I'll have to check out the schedule tonight. BUT Josh, I promise I will be home for your birthday. Cross my heart!

Floating on Through

Time has been passing quite quickly. On Friday all I had was anatomy, and we got to dissect and eyeball :) As a matter of fact, it was really fun. Kirston managed to squirt herself in the face with some eyeball fluid haha. But ya, if you ever have a chance to dissect an eye, do it. Very interesting.

After that I went back home for the weekend with Kayla. Johnny, Matt, Brittney, Cortlin and I went to see the Woman in Black. I enjoyed it, although it didn't scare me quite as much as I had hoped it would. Still, go see it.
FUN FACT: The original Woman in Black's main character arthur was played by the man who played James Potter in Harry Potter. And Daniel Radcliffe got to play arthur in the remake. Lolz

After the movie we all went to Boston Pizza for some grub. Amber and Boots joined us as well which was lovely.
Then I went home, got changed into dance wear, grabbed Kayla, then headed over to Ambers. We chilled there for a while then went to Tequila haha. Props to Johnny and Matt for coming, I know how much you guys love and adore Tequila. It was ok, way too dead though.

Saturday I got up and went to go see Curtis and Marge who had just gotten back from Jamaica. So we visited for a while then I had to head back to meet up with my mom and Kayla for our girls shopping day.
Got a new blazer, in nude. So now I have a nude, black, and rust one. Holy
Also got another faux leather jacket, this one is goldy.
AND, a faux fur vest. Its Kaylas enemy haha she hates it. I've wanted one forever though, although I'm not sure when I will be able to wear it haha. I WILL MAKE IT WORK.

Took a nap and then woke up to the most delicious dinner curtosy of my mother. Roast chicken, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn and gravy. Ugh, so good.
Then I met up with a bunch of the bros at Osheas for a couple of casual drinks, but I think i had a bit of the itis, cause i found it difficult to stay awake.

So Cortlin and I just went to my house and watched Star Trek.
Correction
I watched star trek
Cortlin just snored in my ear haha

Sunday morning we had brunch with my dad at Original Joes, which is always lovely. Ran a few errands with Cortlin, then I was on the road and back in Regina by six.

Today I had my first midterm, for Interpersonal Partnerships. It was one of those tests that almost insults you based on how easy it was. Here was one of the questions.........

A sign that alerts a seasoned nurse that a nursing student lacks professionalism is:
A)He charts clearly and correctly
B)He talks about personal client information with his classmates
C)He shows up on time to work, tidy and ready
D)He has a pleasant attitude

REALLY?!?!?!

We also got to watch the videos of ourselves in mock counselling sessions that we made last week haha. I can't stand the sound of my own voice on camera.

But yes, that is my update
:)

Blogging is Hard

Man, where did I leave off?

James' birthday weekend was awesome, we went to the Skuz which was packed for some odd reason? I had fun though, drank too much, which is always fun.
The next day I stayed in and watched a movie with my parents. I dont remember which movie but I want to say.....The Help? No that was over Christmas.
Anyway.

School is school

Two weekends ago I went out with one of my new favorite people, Kristin, from my class. She's amazing. We met up with her boyfriend and his friends then went to The Owl which is the campus bar and just got shitty. It was super fun, her friends are awesome. On the way home we stopped at BK for the Original Chicken sandwich because apparently it is offensive that I have never had one. And you know what? It was amazing. Could have tasted better due to the booze i had drank, but either way. I loved it.
The next night I went with my roommates down to MooseJaw to go to the spa for a nice swim. It was relaxing. Plus after I got boston pizza so that always makes me happy.

School was school.
I passed my first anatomy exam!!!!! hoorah

This weekend I drove all the way over to Burstall SK to go see my bb. Cortlin just moved into his house so I had to go look at it and judge how it smelled like man. We drove to Medicine Hat to get tons of house shit on Friday, but other then that we were super chill. Just watched movies, played mortal combat (i know, even i played, kill me) and cooked copious amounts of bacon wrapped water chestnuts. It was grand, it was a pretty shitty deal when I had to leave Monday morning.
Oh, his house is haunted btw.

But this week is almost over ish. In Interpersonal relationships on Monday we were videotaped counselling each other, which I hate because I cant stand the sound of my own voice on recordings.
Today we learned more about babies.

And I had a job interview at this pub called the Knotted Thistle. Its a freaking four part hiring process and today was part two. The first part was a phone interview, then a face to face interview where they took my picture etc, next is references, then the fourth is a mystery.
Anyway, this pub doesnt open up until mid February. But I must get this job.
Why?
Because its an Irish pub and the uniform involves a kilt. Fuck ya.
Fingers. Are. Crossed.

I;m skeptical though.

Ugh, time to go and get groceries.

The day the Cows ran Away

Bet you think my title has something to do with my blog post.
Well
It doesnt.
Just came to me.

This week has freaking flown by. Monday I learned nothing, got home and went to sleep.
Tuesday I had Healthy Development so we learned about what happens to the female body during pregnancy. If that doesn't cement my legs shut, then sweet lord nothing will. Sounds shitty, looks shitty. No fucking thanks.
After that a bunch of us ladies went over to the UofR campus and went to The Owl for lunch. Kayla joined us and I had delicious sweet potato fires. Probably the best I've ever had. We discussed much important things, like stupid B and living arrangements for next fall. I had fun x 10 :) But then I had to spend 600 bucks on a class i dont even want to take, so the fun ended there.

Wednesday was my first day of our second clinical rotation. This time its pretty low key, and focus; on the relationship aspect of our jobs. SO they set us up with an elderly man or woman and we just have to become bestest friends :)
I was assigned to a gentleman from Rome. Thick accent, total womanizer, amazing. I plan on discussing my summer travels to Rome with him much. But I got to go around and meet the otehr residents. man, they are all so cute and nice. It'll be fun.
Then I went to Coda because I enjoy looking at all the beautiful clothes I will never be ab;e to afford haha. The girl behind the counter brought her dog who is a black corgie/basset hound. SO CUTE. looks like a mini black lab for some reason, with a hot dog looking body.

This morning all I had was physical assessment, which is basically a class dedicated to helping us practice for the OSCE which stands for Objective Structured Clinical Exam. Its a 30 min head to toe general physical exam that we have to perform on a client in April in front of our teachers. High pressure, pass or fail. So its stressful.

Tomorrow I am excited for though. I have class until noon then I am catching a flight back to Saskatoon. Yes. I said flight. How lazy am I?
But Bob had a ticket credit that expires at the end of the month so he suggested I use it. It'll be weird getting home in like half an hour haha.
But then we shall celebrate James' birthday :)
can not wait.
must dance

Why so lonely blog?

Holy shit its almost been a month since I last blogged.
Well, heres a quick recap of what I did over the Christmas break:

- I DID pass anatomy. fuck yeah
-Went to Medicine Hat to visit Cortlin
- Got the mukluks I wanted
- Got a 32 gig Ipod touch. ballin
- Ate lots
- Didn't sleep enough
- Best potluck ever
- Spent love time with Sam
- Bitchin New Years

And thats about it. Now I'm back in school and, man, its crazy already. My classes include:
1. Interpersonal Relationships
2. Anatomy
3. Physical Assessment
4. Human Development
5. Indigenous Studies

I'm pumped about all of them except for indigenous. Its an online course and just doesn't interest me at all. There, I said it.

Already I'm in clinical setting on Tuesday which blows my mind. I'm at a place called Dove House which I'm assuming is long term care again. I get to dress casual though because its more relationship based rather than medical practice.

I just finished applying for some care aid positions as well. Christmas killed my VISA so I need to take care of that ASAP.
So hopefully that happens quickly.

and thats that
